Lobos Open MW Play With 4-0 Sweep of Air Force
ALBQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico made quick work of the homestanding Air Force Falcons, sweeping the top three singles matches as the Lobos rolled to a 4-0 win over Air Force in the Mountain West opener for UNM. UNM returns home to host Nevada at noon on Saturday at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium on a busy Saturday as men’s tennis, softball and baseball are all at home.
The Lobo tennis team will be hosting a pre-match tailgate starting at 11 am prior to the match, and all fans are invited to attend.
New Mexico took a 1-0 lead with doubles wins by Alex Maggs and Arda Azkara 6-2 at No. 1 and a clinching win by Rafael Abdulsalam and Ryoma Matsushita at No. 3, also by a 6-2 score. Those wins allowed UNM to comeback from 1-0 down in doubles.
In singles, it was no problem. Azkara, Aram Noroozian and Abdulsalam all won in straight sets, with Adbulsalam clinching the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Phillip Deaton. UNM was in good position to win each of the other singles matches as well.
NOTES: Georgia Samaha was up 4-1 in the third, so he didn’t official earn a win and stayed at a team-best 20 wins … Noroozian is second with 17.
