Lobos Fall to Fresno State 3-1 in First Game

by Allison Weiss

FRESNO, Calif.— The Lobos fell 3-1 in the series opener at Fresno State with UNM tallying five hits and Amber Linton throwing another complete game on Friday.

Five different Lobos registered a hit, led by a double by Keyannah Chavez in the fourth inning with the freshman scoring on a Maddie Boldt grounder to third for the lone Lobo run.

The Lobos left two runners on in the first inning after Peyton Robinson led off with a walk, and a grounder, a fielder’s choice by Rachael Hathoot and another groundout left both Robinson and Hathoot in scoring position. UNM again had a runner reach third in the third after Jenna Trim led off with a hit-by-pitch and moved over on a sacrifice bunt and infield single by Ashley Archuleta that put runners on the corners. However, the inning came to an end after Archuleta was called out for leaving early.

Fresno State opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third with one run coming off of a Lobo error, although the Lobos answered in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit in half. Chavez hit a one-out double to left and Chloe Yeatts followed with a single to right field that moved Chavez to third before Boldt brought her in with a grounder to third, with Chavez breaking for home on the throw to first and sliding in safely.

The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the fifth and UNM had two more runners reach with a runner reaching second in the sixth and a runner reaching third in the seventh with the Lobos unable to cut into Fresno State’s lead in either instance.

Linton threw her 12th complete game of the season, striking out three in the loss.

The series with the Bulldogs resumes on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT. The game will not be streamed, but live stats will be available.
