Gallegos named MW Pitcher of the Week

by Evan O'Kelly

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A season-best performance from New Mexico junior Isaac Gallegos earned the right-hander Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors, announced by the conference office on Monday.

The Grants native logged eight stellar innings on Sunday at Fresno State, pitching the Lobos to a 7-2 victory to salvage a road victory in the series. “He had an outstanding outing, and this honor is much deserved,” said UNM head coach Tod Brown. “It was a big game for us to bounce back after Saturday’s loss, and he was locked in right from pitch one.”

Gallegos’ eight innings, seven strikeouts, and 115 pitches thrown were all season highs, as he continued to build an impressive resume in his debut season with New Mexico. Gallegos allowed just five hits in his eight frames of work, and both of the runs he allowed were unearned. A second-inning error was the only thing that allowed Fresno State to score off the righty, who lowered his season ERA to 2.17 which ranks him second in the Mountain West among qualifying pitchers.

Gallegos also maintained the top opposing batting average in the conference, with the opposition hitting just .173 off of him this season. He walked just one hitter in his eight innings on Sunday, upping his strikeout-to-walk ratio to 3.25 on the season. Gallegos improved his record to 4-0 on the season, as he leads the conference and ranks eighth in the NCAA in victories this spring. In his first year with the Lobos, Gallegos has pitched at least five full innings in each of his five starts.

The Lobos have now claimed four Mountain West weekly awards this spring including three pitcher of the week honors. Senior Riley Egloff claimed the honor in back-to-back weeks, and Dylan Ditzenberger was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Feb. 27.

New Mexico (12-7, 3-3 Mountain West) is in action on Tuesday night with a non-conference home game against rival New Mexico State (2-15). The Lobos return to conference play this weekend, with a three-game series at Nevada kicking off on Friday evening.
