Yeatts Hits Home Run in Loss to Texas Tech

by Allison Weiss

LUBBOCK, Texas— Chloe Yeatts hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to give UNM a 2-1 lead, but the Red Raiders scored six unanswered runs to win the Texas Tech Invitational finale 7-2 on Sunday.

After TTU opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, Lauren Garcia led off with walk for UNM’s first baserunner and Olivia Birkinshaw hit into a fielder’s choice and later stole second to put a runner in scoring position. A passed ball moved her to third and Yeatts recorded UNM’s first hit of the game, a home run to left to put the Lobos in front.

However, Texas Tech answered with two runs on a two-out, two-run home run of its own before a strikeout by starter Amber Linton left the bases loaded.

The Lobos were in prime position to tie or take the lead in the third, with Peyton Robinson reaching on a bunt, Keyannah Chavez with a walk and Rachael Hathoot with a hit that dropped in right, but a double play with Robinson being thrown out trying to tag from third ended the inning.

The Red Raiders added four runs in the bottom of the third, and the Lobos tried to start a two-out rally in the top of the fifth with Robinson reaching on a hit up the middle and Chavez with a single that dropped just in front of the left fielder but the runners were left stranded on a popup.

After the third, UNM kept the Red Raiders off the board in the final three innings for the final score.

Entering in relief in the third, Taylor Snow retired eight-straight batters between the third and sixth innings, pitching a total of 4.0 innings and struck out three while allowing two runs on four hits.
