Lobos Head West for Final Non-Conference Matches
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It’s been a nice long break and a chance to recharge, but the Lobos now head west for their final two non-conference matches, taking on a pair of similar but battle-tested opponents in Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona. The Lobos will face the ‘Lopes on Monday and the Lumberjacks on Tuesday, both on the road.
The Lobos haven’t played since a 6-1 victory over New Mexico State on February 25, well over two weeks ago. The Lobos did face off with UTEP on February 26, but the wind turned into too much for the match to go on. While not the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week, Sarah O’Connor did win the award her last time out, winning matches at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles.
The Lobos have been brilliant in singles so far, going a combined 28-4 in their seven dual matches and the trio of Maud Vandeputte, Katherine Jhang and Satoho Toriumi are a combined 15-0. UNM has been solid in doubles too, going 17-2.
Grand Canyon is 4-6 on the season and Northern Arizona is 6-4, but both own wins over solid MW programs, with GCU winning 4-3 over San Jose State, and Northern Arizona beating Fresno State and Colorado State, both 4-3.
