Mashburn, House and Udeze Earn All-Mountain West Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico had three players earn All-Mountain West honors as the conference announced its 2023 men’s basketball awards on Tuesday. Junior guard Jamal Mashburn, Jr. was named to the first team, senior guard Jaelen House was named to the second team, and graduate forward Morris Udeze was named to the third team. In addition, House was named to the All-Defensive Team.

The three selections to the three all-Mountain West teams ties a school record for the Lobos. New Mexico also had three players selected in 2004-05, 2009-10, 2012-13 and 2013-14. Mashburn and House, both third-team selections last season, become the 12th and 13th Lobos to be named to the All-Mountain West teams multiple times.

Mashburn became New Mexico’s 17th all-time first-team All-Mountain West selection, and first since Elijah Brown in 2015-16. He leads the conference in scoring at 19.5 ppg and averaged a league-best 21.0 ppg in conference games. His 15 20-point games leads the Mountain West and are most by a Lobo since 2015-16. Mashburn has scored in double figures in 30 of 31 games this season, highlighted by a career-high 33 points at Nevada.

House averaged 16.8 points and 4.7 assists per game this season, making him one of three Mountain West players to rank in the conference top six in both categories. His 76 steals not only lead the conference, they are 24 more than any other player in the Mountain West as he ranks fourth nationally at 2.62 steals per game. He had a season-high 29 points in the win at San Diego State and a season-high 10 assists at Nevada.

Udeze averaged 16.4 points and 9.2 rebounds this season, including being the only Mountain West player to average a double-double in conference play this season at 15.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He leads the conference in rebounding (9.2 rpg), double-doubles (12) and field goal percentage (.621) this season. He had a career-high 33 points vs. Northern Colorado as he was the MVP of the Lobo Classic and a career-high 17 rebounds vs. Wyoming.

All three players were also honored on Monday when the media’s All-Mountain West awards were announced. House was named to the first team, while Mashburn and Udeze were both second-team selections. In addition, Udeze was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Year by the media.

The Lobos (21-10, 8-10) will begin play at the Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday with a first-round matchup with Wyoming (9-21, 4-14). Game time at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is 5 p.m. MT (4 p.m. PT) and the game will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
