Lobos Win Lamkin San Diego Classic for Second Victory of the Season

by Steve Kirkland

CHULA VISTA, Calif. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team captured its second victory of the season, winning the Lamkin San Diego Classic at the San Diego Country Club. The Lobos shot a final round 8-under, the best round of the day, to finish at 20-under and edge host San Diego State by one stroke.

New Mexico was tied for fifth at even par after Monday’s first round, but rallied to win with the best second and third rounds in the field. The Lobos, who entered the week ranked No. 61 nationally in Golfstat, beat four top-50 teams in the 15-team field. Behind the Lobos at 20-under and No. 30 SDSU at 19-under, were No. 34 Washington and No. 20 Colorado State at 7-under and UCLA at 3-under.

“It was a great day for our team,” said head coach Glen Millican. “The wind was really blowing and scoring today was difficult. It was hard to get it anywhere near the pin on a lot of holes, so for Albert to shoot 66 in those conditions is impressive. Bastien played steady all day and made a huge putt on 18 to clinch it. It’s tough to beat San Diego State, especially on their home course, along with a really good field. This win gives us a lot of confidence and momentum moving forward.”

The Lobos had two of the top five individuals at the event. Bastien Amat shot a final round 70 to finish the tournament T-2nd at 8-under. It was his second top-five finish of the season. Albert Boneta shot a final round 66, the low round of the day, to finish T-4th at 6-under for the tournament. Carson Herron shot a final round 71 and Matthew Watkins shot 73 on Tuesday as both finished the tournament T-17th at 1-under. Brandon Shong rounded out the lineup with a final round 75, while Alvaro Portillo shot 80 on Tuesday while playing as an individual.

New Mexico won the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno in October. It marks the second straight season the Lobos have had multiple team titles.

The Lobos return to action March 17-18 with the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
