by Steve Kirkland

CHULA VISTA, Calif. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team had a strong first day at the Lamkin San Diego Classic at the San Diego Country Club. The Lobos shot 12-under over the first 36 holes of the event to finish the day in second place.

After shooting even par in the morning’s first round, the Lobos shot the best round of the afternoon at 12-under. Host San Diego State is the 36-hole leader at 16-under, four shots ahead of New Mexico. Colorado State is third at 9-under, while Washington (4-under) and UCLA (3-under) round out the top five.

“Great job today by all six Lobos,” said head coach Glen Millican. “There were so many instances where they bounced back from a tough hole or a tough stretch and kept going. That paid off when they were able to finish so well in the second round.”

Bastien Amat is the top Lobo on the individual leaderboard, tied for fourth at 6-under through 36 holes. He rebounded from opening the day with a triple-bogey to shoot a 1-under 71 in the first round before a 5-under 67 in the second round. Matthew Watkins is T-15 at 2-under after rounds of 73 and 69. Albert Boneta, Brandon Shong and Carson Herron all finished T-21st at even par through two rounds, as did Alvaro Portillo, who is playing the event as an individual.

The Lamkin San Diego Classic will conclude Tuesday with the final round at the San Diego Country Club.
