Lobos Tied for Sixth After Opening Round of Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS, Nev. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Sunday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. The Lobos shot 2-under during the opening round to finish the day T-6th in a field that includes 11 teams in the Golfstat Top 50.

No. 4 North Carolina is the first-round leader at 17-under, seven shots ahead of No. 14 Pepperdine at 10-under. No. 16 Texas and No. 11 Florida are tied for third at 5-under, No. 7 Illinois Is fifth at 3-under, while the Lobos are tied for sixth with TCU. Among the teams UNM finished the first round ahead of are No. 8 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 15 Texas A&M and No. 25 San Diego State.

“It was a very nice start for our guys,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Everyone played solid and kept themselves in it all day.”

Bastien Amat shot the low round of the day for the Lobos, posting a 2-under 70 to be T-15th on the individual leaderboard. Albert Boneta shot a 1-under 71, while Brandon Shong shot even par 72. Carson Herron shot 73 and Virgilio Paz shot 74 to round out the UNM lineup.

The Southern Highlands Collegiate will continue Monday and conclude Tuesday in Las Vegas.
