UNM Drops Two Games on Saturday
LAS CRUCES, N.M.— Rachael Hathoot hit a double, a triple and a home run in Saturday’s game against New Mexico State, finishing with a career-high four RBI, while Chloe Yeatts added her second home run of the week, but it wasn’t enough as the Lobos fell to the Aggies 7-6.
The Lobos were the first to get on the board after Yeatts hit a two-out home run to left center to give UNM the 1-0 lead, however, the Aggies answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning on five hits.
Hathoot’s double in the third inning with Keyannah Chavez on first and Peyton Robinson on second cut the deficit to three as both Lobos came around to score and after a scoreless fourth, the Lobos cut the deficit to one on the at-bat of Hathoot.
After Chavez singled through the left side, Hathoot drove the 1-1 pitch to the gap in right center for a triple to cut the margin to 6-4. Reyan Tuck followed with a single to the outfield to score Hathoot and Lauren Garcia kept the hits going with an infield single to put the tying run in scoring position. However, a strikeout and a groundout left both runners stranded.
NMSU added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out home run, which proved to be the difference. Hathoot led off the seventh with a home run and Yeatts hit a two-out double to right field to put the tying run again in scoring position, but a lineout ended the game and the comeback attempt.
Hathoot went 3-4 at the plate with Yeatts 2-3 and Chavez 2-4 as the Lobos outhit the Aggies 11-8, but also left seven runners on base.
In the circle, Amber Linton went 1.1 innings before being replaced by Emmalyn Brinka, with the freshman going 4.2 innings and finished with a season-high five strikeouts.
GAME 2: NEBRASKA
The Huskers scored eight runs in the first inning and added one in the second, five in the third and one in the fifth to win 15-0 in five.
Four Lobos registered hits with Hathoot and Yeatts adding one more each to their day’s total. Hathoot and Yeatts’ hits both came in the first inning to give UNM its best chance to get on the board, with Maddie Boldt tallying a single in the second and Olivia Birkinshaw adding a pinch-hit single in the fourth.
UNM used four pitchers in the game with Taylor Snow getting the start and pitching 0.2 innings before Bella Mitchell entered in relief, pitching 0.2 innings. Samantha Fohrman threw 1.2 innings and Jenna Trim made her first appearance in the circle this season, going 2.0 innings.
