Egloff earns Mountain West Pitcher of the Week

by Evan O'Kelly

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After pitching the New Mexico baseball team to a victory over No. 23 Oregon State on Friday, junior right-hander Riley Egloff has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week announced by the conference on Monday.

Egloff allowed one run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking just one in his debut outing of the season on Friday. That was good enough to set the Lobos up for a 7-2 victory over the Beavers in their season opener.

After surrendering a solo home run in the second inning, Egloff settled into a groove and kept the Beavers’ bats quiet the rest of his outing. Egloff struck out the side in the third, and retired the side in order in the fourth for a string of five straight hitters retired. He finished his stellar season debut with back-to-back strikeouts, ending the fifth inning with the Lobos ahead 3-1.

Egloff was two strikeouts off his career high of nine, and earned the eighth victory of his Lobo career. This is the second-career Mountain West Pitcher of the Week award for Egloff, who earned the honor on March 21, 2022. It is the first weekly award of the season for the Lobos.

New Mexico (3-1) is next in action this weekend at home with a four-game series against Northern Colorado kicking off on Friday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.
