Lobos Score 11 Runs in Run Rule of Buffalo

by Allison Weiss

EL PASO, Texas— For the third time this season, the Lobos were the enforcers, jumping out to an early lead with runs in the first inning,  ultimately winning their third five-inning run rule of the season following an 11-2 victory over Buffalo Friday night.

Chloe Yeatts and Lauren Garcia accounted for half of UNM’s 10 hits in the game, with Garcia a perfect 3-3 in her return home to El Paso and Yeatts 2-4. Garcia led the Lobos with four RBI, while Maddie Boldt recorded her third-straight game with three RBI. Seven different Lobos tallied at least one hit with six different players accounting for at least one RBI. Further, Boldt, Peyton Robinson and Keyannah Chavez kept their on-base streak alive, reaching base in all six games this season.

Amber Linton pitched 4.0 innings with six strikeouts before Taylor Snow entered in the fifth and registered two strikeouts on three batters faced. Linton earned the win to go to 2-1.

Aided by an error in the top of the first that allowed three unearned runs to score, UNM got out to a 4-0 lead on three hits and a walk. With runners on second and third, Garcia put the Lobos on the board with a two-run single to right field and a double by Emma Bramson put two more runners in scoring position, in which Boldt brought the runners home on another double.

Buffalo pushed a run across on a grounder to Ashley Archuleta after having its first two batters reach before Linton ended the inning with consecutive strikeouts.

The Lobos got the run back in their next at-bat and then some, scoring seven runs on seven hits with six runs coming with two outs. In total, eight of UNM’s 11 runs on the night came with two outs in the inning.

Garcia started the inning with a single up the middle followed by a single by Yeatts that put the first two hitters on. A wild pitch put two runners in scoring position and Boldt scored the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Chavez started the two-out rally with a double to left field to score a run and Rachael Hathoot brought her in on a triple to right. Turning the lineup over, Robinson drew a four-pitch walk with pinch-hitter Loran Walker loading the bases on a hit-by-pitch. Leslie Romero hit an infield single to score Hathoot and Garcia kept the inning going with her second at-bat in the inning, another two-run single to right that pushed the lead to 10-1. Yeatts singled to the shortstop to score Romero for the final run before the inning came to an end.

Linton retired seven straight batters between the second and fourth innings that included three strikeouts before the Bulls got runners on and scored another run in the fourth.

Entering to start the bottom of the fifth, Snow retired the side with bookend strikeouts to end the game in five.

With the win, the Lobos improve to 3-3 on the season. UNM has two games on the schedule on Saturday, starting with Santa Clara at 10 a.m. MT followed by Texas Tech at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on YouTube with live stats available.
