Lobos Finish Seventh at John Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Hawaii –– The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded play Friday at the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Lobos shot 19-under at the event to finish tied for seventh place.

With bad weather forecasted for the weekend, the event wrapped up a day early. The Lobos finished the second round in the morning at 12-under in fifth place before shooting 7-under during the final round.

BYU was the wire-to-wire winner at 54-under, ahead of Arizona at 36-under and Texas A&M at 32-under. California was fourth at 27-under, followed by San Diego State (24-under), Long Beach State (20-under) and the Lobos and Utah (19-under).

“It was a pretty solid event for us,” said head coach Glen Millican. “There were some areas we could’ve taken more advantage of the course today, but we did play the difficult stretch much better. We had one guy light it up each round to help us beat some good teams. We still need to tighten up some areas to contend, but the team has shown they are all capable of playing great.”

Bastien Amat was the low Lobo at the event, finishing T-14th at 9-under with rounds of 66-71-70. Carson Herron used a second-round 67 to finish at 4-under for the week. Brandon Shong finished at 2-under, as did Virgilio Paz who shot a final round 66. Albert Boneta rounded out the lineup at 4-over.

The Lobos return to action at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas, held Feb. 26-28 at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
