Lobos Sit in 9th After Day 1 of Championship Meet

Houston, Tex. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team completed day one of competition at the end-of-season Mountain West Conference Championship meet on Wednesday. The Lobos finished the day in ninth place of the meet field which includes eight Mountain West Conference foes.

The Lobos’ bright spot of the day came in the 200-yard medley relay, where seniors Marina Olmstead and Ola Tomaszek, junior Jordan Foster, and sophomore Katy McCarter threw down a season-best time (1:42.08). They beat the team’s previous best time of the year by over two full seconds.

New Mexico’s A-relay in the 800-yard freestyle relay consisted of freshman Maya Clise, sophomore Brynn Quintana, junior Ashley Sterchele, and sophomore Paige Lyons. The relay finished with a time of 7:45.96.

Freshman Melissa Venzon was New Mexico’s top finisher in the 1-meter diving prelims, placing 21st with a score of 209.15.

Thursday will see the 3-meter diving event as well as four more swimming events: the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, and 400-yard medley relay.
