Lobos Look to Stay Perfect Heading to Texas

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Three-up, three-down is more than a softball deal as it decribes the first two weeks of the Lobo women’s tennis schedule.  The Lobos have faced three teams, and disposed of them all by an aggregate score of 18-0.  Now, three-up is this weekend as the Lobos take on three teams on a Texas roadtrip, all in Abilene.

UNM faces Abilene Christian on Friday, Tyler Junior College on Saturday and Lamar on Sunday in a three-match road swing.  The will not be any live stats or streams of the matches.

For UNM, the Lobos are coming off a 4-0 win over Montana State in which Maud Vandeputte picked up the only singles win thanks to a pair of defaults.  UNM also swept the two doubles matches that were played.  That match was UNM’s only home non-conference match of the year, and one of three home matches scheduled for 2023.

The tandem of Leonie Hoppe and Katherine Jhang won at No. 1 doubles for their team-best ninth win as a duo, and for Hoppe it was her 12th doubles win overall.  The Lobos have also gotten good results in the spring from Sarah O’Connor, who has moved into the No. 1 singles slot and is 2-0 there, and was up big against Montana State when her match was halted.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS

ABILENE CHRISTIAN (4-5, 3-0 Home) ACU has lost three of four, the one win in that stretch a 6-1 road win at Tulsa.  It has played a tough schedule with road matches at TCU and Texas Tech as well as at SMU.  ACU’s home wins are over UTSA 4-3, Trinity 7-0 and Lubbock Christian 7-0.  Olivia Sears is 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and ACU is 24-27 in dual matches in singles and 10-12 in dual matches in doubles.

TYLER JC (2-1, 0-0 Neutral)  The Apaches are just 2-1 on the season, having won the last two matches, including an 8-1 win over Collins College.  Yeva Kramerova has an overall team-best 11-6 singles record.  Tyler plays Midwestern State on Friday before facing UNM.

LAMAR (2-4, 0-1 Neutral)  The Cardinals are 0-3 away from Beaumont, but their most recent match was a 6-1 win over UTRGV.  The Cardinals lost to North Texas and UTSA just prior to that match.  Lamar has scuffled in the spring with a team 13-20 singles record and 4-13 doubles record.  The Cardinals and Wildcats play on Saturday.
