LIHUE, Hawaii –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began play Thursday at the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Lobos shot 14-under through the first round and a half and are in third place among the 21-team field at the halfway point.

The Lobos shot 6-under during the opening round. With rain in the forecast for the upcoming days, the coaches decided to start the second round on Thursday. New Mexico is 8-under through nine holes of the second round when darkness halted play.

BYU is leading the event at 23-under, one shot ahead of No. 19 Arizona at 22-under. New Mexico is third at 14-under, just ahead of UTEP at 12-under and No. 9 Texas A&M at 11-under.

“Nice job by all six Lobos today,” said head coach Glen Millican. “The finishing holes are tough and they got us a little, but overall we did what you need to do on this course. We played the scoring holes well and managed the hard ones.”

Bastien Amat finished the day in second place on the individual leaderboard at 10-under, after shooting a first-round 66 and sitting at 4-under through nine holes of the second round. Carson Herron and Brandon Shong are each at 3-under, while Albert Boneta and Virgilio Paz are both at 3-over when play was halted. Jacob King, playing as an individual, is at 1-over.

The John Burns Intercollegiate is scheduled to resume on Friday and conclude on Saturday, weather permitting.
