ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team returns to action this week as it travels to Hawaiian island of Kauai for the John Burns Intercollegiate. The event at the 6,905-yard, par-72 Ocean Course at Hokuala will be held Thursday to Saturday.
The tournament will consist of one round per day, Thursday-Saturday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
New Mexico is the tournament’s defending champion, having won the event that February with a score of 25-under. The Lobos, ranked No. 62 in the latest GolfStat rankings, are one of 11 top-100 teams in the 21-team field. UNM is joined by No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 19 Arizona, No. 20 San Diego State, No. 51 BYU, No. 53 Cal, No. 57 UNC Wilmington, No. 58 Long Beach State, No. 70 USC, No. 93 Washington State and No. 97 Fresno State, while host Hawaii, Grand Canyon, Loyola Marymount, Nevada, Santa Clara, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, Utah, UTEP and UNLV round out the field.
The Lobos are fielding a lineup of Albert Boneta, Bastien Amat, Carson Herron, Brandon Shong and Virgilio Paz. Jacob King is playing the event as an individual.
UNM has two top-two finishes in five events this season, having won the Wolf Pack Classic in October in Reno and posting a runner-up finish when hosting the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in September. In their last outing, the Lobos finished seventh at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate two weeks ago in Tucson.
