Augmon Records First Double-Double as Lobos Fall at UNLV
LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Aniyah Augmon led the Lobos with a career-high 18 points and recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds, tying her career high, as New Mexico fell 79-63 to UNLV Saturday night.
Augmon went 3-3 from three-point range with her three three-pointers also a career high, 5-5 from the free-throw line and 5-8 from the floor in 28:04 of play, joined in double figures by Viané Cumber with 12 behind two three-pointers and 5-12 effort from the floor and Paula Reus with 11 points. Amaya Brown finished with a team-high two steals, with the Lobos finishing with six as a team.
The Lobos opened the game scoring the first four points on baskets by LaTora Duff and Reus and forced UNLV into four turnovers on its first four possessions before the Lady Rebels took a 7-4 lead. UNLV led by as many as eight at 18-10 before the Lobos closed the gap on an Augmon three and a Brown jumper that cut the deficit to three at 18-15 followed by a Kath van Bennekom three with 12 seconds left to close the quarter with the Lobos trailing 20-18. Augmon paced UNM with seven points in the quarter.
A LaTascya Duff three-pointer made it 22-21 UNLV, giving the Lobo her 200th-career three-pointer and in the process became just the third player all-time to achieve the feat. However, the Lady Rebels answered with a run to push the margin to 10 and took a 40-30 lead into the break.
The Lobos were not able to recover in the final two quarters, but did close the game on a 9-3 run which included three-pointers by Augmon and Cumber, an and-one for Reus and a Hulda Joaquim free throw for the final 79-63 score. UNM outscored UNLV 24-17 in the fourth quarter with Reus accounting for eight, Augmon for six, Cumber for five, and Jaelyn Bates for four.
Following Saturday’s game, the Lobos are 10-8 on the season, 2-3 in the Mountain West. Up next for UNM is San Diego State on Thursday, Jan. 19.
