Lobos Down Boise State 2-0 to Climb into MW Lead
BOISE, Idaho – The New Mexico women’s soccer team climbed into first place in the Mountain West standings after a 2-0 victory over Boise State Thursday afternoon at the Boas Soccer Complex. The Lobos (7-3-6, 5-1-3 MW) ran their unbeaten streak to five games while handing the Broncos (7-4-7, 3-2-4 MW) their second straight defeat.
Karlee Maes and Leilani Baker scored for the Lobos, who will enter the final two regular season games one point ahead of San Diego State and San Jose State in the conference race. Alli Davis made four saves in goal as New Mexico posted its third consecutive shutout.
The Lobos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute as Maes headed in a corner kick from Brynn Boeyink for her second goal of the season. That goal snapped a nearly 500-minute home shutout streak for the Broncos, who had not allowed a goal at home since Aug. 28. That proved to be the only goal of the first half as UNM took that 1-0 advantage into halftime.
New Mexico doubled the lead in the 55th minute when Jadyn Edwards set up Baker, who curled a one-timer over the keeper into the far side of the net to score for the third consecutive game. It was her seventh goal of the season and her Mountain West leading fifth goal in conference play.
Boise State outshot New Mexico 13-9 overall, while the Lobos had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal, while and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Davis recorded her fourth shutout of the season in net for UNM.
“Today was a battle that at times I thought Boise State had the better of,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “They are a very good team and we are proud to come away with a big win on the road.”
The Lobos will visit Utah State on Sunday before ending the regular season on Oct. 27 by hosting San Diego State. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the Mountain West Championship, hosted by New Mexico from Oct. 30-Nov. 5.
