ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — With the 112th edition of the Rio Grande Rivalry on Saturday, the Lobo Football team will be wearing throwback helmet decals, showcasing the Lobo profile logo that was on the helmets for every year but one from 1980 through 1998.
The helmet design is the same that was used last year when the Rio Grande Rivalry picked up after a one-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic that canceled the 2020 matchup.
“Establishing traditions for our program is very important, and the winningest team in Lobo history, the 1982 team that went 10-1, wore this helmet with that logo,” said Gonzales. “I think it’s a great way to honor that team and to establish a tradition of wearing this special helmet for the Rio Grande Rivalry every year.”
The Lobos, while wearing the former logo from 1980-1987 and 1989-98, also went a combined 15-3 against New Mexico State in the Rio Grande Rivalry over that time. With last year’s game in the same helmet, the Lobos won 34-25.
