New Mexico and Colorado State Play to 1-1 Draw

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to four games with its third straight tie, playing to a 1-1 draw with Colorado State on Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos (2-2-5, 0-0-2 MW) and Rams (4-3-3, 1-0-1 MW) traded second half goals to each remain unbeaten in Mountain West play.

Karlee Maes scored her first goal of the season midway through the second half to draw the Lobos level after Colorado State had taken a lead nine minutes earlier. She becomes the seventh different goal scorer for New Mexico this season.

For the second straight game, the Lobos played a scoreless first half. New Mexico’s best chance came in the 28th minute when Zaria Katesigwa’s point-blank shot was saved by the Ram keeper. In the final minutes of the half, Alli Davis made a full-extension save on a shot destined for the upper corner to keep Colorado State scoreless.

In the second half, the Rams took the lead in the 54th minute when Davis made a diving save on an attempt from Liv Layton, but the rebound went right to Kaitlyn Abrams, who scored her second goal of the season. The Lobos drew even in the 63rd minute when Leilani Baker headed a loose ball at the top of the box to Maes, who one-timed a shot inside the far post for her first goal of the year.

New Mexico outshot Colorado State 21-15 in the contest and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Davis made five saves in goal for the Lobos.

“I am not disappointed in our team, they played really well today,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “When you look at games, and the statistics, we are doing things right. At some point those things have to pay off. We created good opportunities, had good energy, and were big in the air. I know if we continue to do that, the wins will come.”

The Lobos will visit Colorado Springs next week for a pair of conference matches. New Mexico will ply at Air Force on Thursday before playing at Colorado College on Sunday.
