ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team earned a runner-up finish at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate as play concluded Saturday at the UNM Championship Course. The Lobos, who entered the final round in second place, stayed in that position with a 4-over third round on their home course to finish at 8-under.

San Diego State took the title with a 16-under total. The Lobos finished two shots ahead of third place UNLV (6-under), while TCU (4-under) and BYU (3-under) also finished the tournament under par.

Albert Boneta was New Mexico’s top individual finisher, shooting a final round 72 to finish fourth at 7-under. Bastien Amat also shot even par on Saturday, while Carson Herron and Matthew Watkins each shot 74 in the third round. Brandon Shong shot 77 to round out the UNM lineup. Virgilio Paz, playing as an individual also shot 72 in the final round, while Connor Adams shot 74 and Alvaro Portillo shot 81.

“Overall, it was a really good week,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Obviously you want to win any time you are in contention, especially in your home event. In our sport we went 17-1 this week, so it was a good week from a win/loss standpoint. There are always areas where you can save some strokes, but we showed that we are capable of competing for a win. There was improvement from last week in Phoenix and that’s what you want, getting better each tournament.”

The Lobos will return to action Oct. 2-4 with the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas.
