by Steve Kirkland

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded its season-opening event on Sunday with the final round of play at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club. The Lobos shot 7-over during the third round to finish the event in tied for 12th place at 7-under for the tournament.

Auburn was the wire-to-wire winner of the event, finishing the tournament at 45-under. Arizona State was second at 40-under, followed by Florida State at 35-under, Georgia Tech at 34-under and Washington at 31-under.

“It was a tough round today,” said head coach Glen Millican. “A couple of big numbers early put us in a bad position before we even got going. Matt and Carson did OK hanging in after that and Bastien and Albert shot decent rounds. It wasn’t what we planned for in the final round, but it shows us some areas we can try to improve in before the Tucker. This event showed us some of how good we can play and also exposed some of how we can get better.”

Bastien Amat shot the low round of the day for New Mexico, carding a 1-under 69 to finish the event at 2-under. Albert Boneta was the Lobos’ top individual finisher at 4-under after a final round 71. Carson Herron shot 73, Matthew Watkins shot 74 and Virgilio Paz shot 75 to round out the UNM lineup.

New Mexico will return to action Sept. 23-24 when it hosts the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course.
