Lobos Visit Texas Tech Thursday Night in Road Opener

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team makes its first road trip of the season as it visits Texas Tech on Thursday night. The Lobos take on the Red Raiders at 6 p.m. MT (7 p.m. CT) at the John Walker Soccer Complex in a game that will be broadcast online on ESPN+.

The Lobos (1-1-0) are coming off a split of an opening homestand last week. After being edged by No. 6 Rutgers in the season opener on Thursday, New Mexico bounced back with a 4-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday. Jadyn Edwards had a first-half hat trick to lead UNM to the win over the Roadrunners and earned TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honors.

The Red Raiders (1-1-0) are concluding a three-game opening homestand, having defeated Troy, 2-0, and falling to Arizona, 1-0, last week. Texas Tech was picked fourth in the preseason Big 12 poll.

Texas Tech leads the all-time series 6-5-1, including a 3-1-0 mark in Lubbock. The Lobos won the last meeting, upsetting then-No. 22 Texas Tech 1-0 in Albuquerque in the 2019 season opener. UNM is looking for its first road win in the series since 1997.

The Lobos will return home next week for a pair of games at the UNM Soccer Complex. New Mexico will host Portland State on Sept. 1 and Grand Canyon on Sept. 4.
