Lobo Men’s Basketball Announces Non-Conference Schedule

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team announced its 2022-23 non-conference schedule Tuesday, featuring 10 games against teams that won at least 20 games last season. Overall, the Lobos will play 20 games at The Pit in 2022-23 with 10 home regular-season non-conference games, nine home Mountain West games and one home exhibition game.

Nine of New Mexico’s non-conference games will be against teams that played in postseason events last year. New Mexico State, Saint Mary’s and Jacksonville State were NCAA Tournament teams, while SMU and Iona played in the NIT. Southern Utah and South Alabama made the semifinals of the Basketball Classic and Northern Colorado was a semifinalist in the CBI. Seven games are against teams that won their regular season conference title or reached the conference’s tournament championship game.

The season begins with a pair of home games as the Lobos host Southern Utah in the season opener on Nov. 7 and play South Alabama on Nov. 11. The first road game of the season is Nov. 15 at SMU before the Lobos return home to host New Mexico State on Nov. 19.

The Lobo Classic returns to The Pit from Nov. 25-27 as UNM hosts Jacksonville State, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado. The round-robin event will feature a doubleheader each day with matchups to be announced later this summer.

New Mexico ends November with its first ever trip to Saint Mary’s on Nov. 30 before opening December at New Mexico State on Dec. 3. The Lobos conclude the non-conference slate with four straight home games, beginning with Western New Mexico on Dec. 6 and UTSA on Dec. 10. The Pitino vs. Pitino matchup with Iona is Dec. 18 at The Pit before the non-conference finale on Dec. 21 against Prairie View A&M.

In the preseason, the Lobos will host Division II CSU Pueblo in an exhibition on Oct. 29.

“For our program to be successful, we need The Pit to be one of the toughest arenas in the country for visitors,” said head coach Richard Pitino. “I know the last few years have been difficult for our fans, but hopefully we can have them back in full force this season. With 11 non-conference games at home, there are plenty of early-season opportunities for Lobo fans to come to a game and make a connection with this team. I am confident that as the community gets to know this group, our fans will want to keep coming back all year long to give us the electric atmosphere that makes The Pit one of the greatest venues in college sports.”

Game times and TV designations for the 2022-23 schedule will be announced at a later date, as will the 18-game Mountain West schedule. Season ticket renewals are currently on sale at GoLobos.com/tickets. New season tickets will go on sale later this summer.
