Albert Boneta to Compete in Barracuda Championship on PGA TOUR

by Steve Kirkland

TRUCKEE, Calif. –– New Mexico rising senior Albert Boneta will compete this week in the Barracuda Championship on the PGA TOUR, held Thursday-Sunday on the Old Greenwood Course of the Tahoe Mountain Club. Boneta, who will compete in the event as an amateur, received a sponsor’s exemption into the field after winning the Wolf Pack Classic last fall in nearby Reno.

Boneta will be making his PGA TOUR debut at the tournament, which is co-sponsored by the DP World Tour, as part of the partnership between the two tours. The Barracuda Championship is the only PGA TOUR event each year to use the Modified Stableford scoring system in which players earn points for birdies and eagles and lose points for bogeys.

Boneta is joined in the field in Tahoe by former Lobo All-American Gavin Green, who currently plays on the DP World Tour. Coverage of the Barracuda Championship will air live on Golf Channel each evening from 4-7 pm MT.

The Barracuda Championship is an Alternate Field Event on the PGA Tour, held at the same time as The Open Championship. Two UNM alumni, Victor Perez and John Catlin, are in the field this week for the 150th Open Championship, held on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Three current Lobos are competing in major amateur events this summer. Brandon Shong is in action this week at the 116th Southern Amateur, held at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. Matthew Watkins and Carson Herron both qualified this week for the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship, held next month in New Jersey. Watkins won the qualifier in Pearland, Texas, while Herron advanced as the runner-up at the qualifier in Stillwater, Minn.
