UNM to Host Lobo Classic in November

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team will host an in-season tournament at The Pit for the first time in 15 years when it hosts the Lobo Classic from November 25-27. The field for the four-team event is New Mexico, Jacksonville State, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado.

The tournament will feature a round-robin format with each team playing each of the other three teams over the three consecutive days. Each day’s schedule will consist of a doubleheader of games at The Pit with the schedule of matchups to be announced at a later date.

This season’s Lobo Classic brings back an event that New Mexico held at The Pit from 1988-1999, with the Lobos taking the title in nine of the 11 editions.

New Mexico will host three schools coming off 20-win seasons in the Lobo Classic. Jacksonville State is coming off a 22-11 season and its second NCAA Tournament appearance in six years, having played Auburn in the NCAA first round of last year’s tournament. North Dakota State went 23-10 last year and reached the Summit League title game for the sixth time in the past eight seasons. Northern Colorado posted a 22-16 record last season, finishing runner-up in the Summit League and reaching the quarterfinals of the CBI.

The Lobos are 4-0 all-time against Northern Colorado, with the last matchup an 86-52 victory in 2004-05 at The Pit. Jacksonville State and North Dakota State will be first-time opponents for UNM.

All games of the Lobo Classic are included in 2022-23 New Mexico Men’s Basketball season tickets. Season ticket renewals are currently on sale at GoLobos.com/tickets. New season tickets will go on sale later this summer.
