by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –– New Mexico senior men’s golfer Sam Choi was named to the 2021-22 Academic All-District Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Choi was a first-team selection in District 7 to the At-Large Team, which honors athletes from sports without a sport-specific award who excel both academically and athletically.

As one of the 15 men selected to the first team in District 7, Choi will now be on the ballot for the Academic All-America At-Large teams, which will be announced in June.

A Liberal Arts major with a 3.62 grade-point-average, Choi had a strong senior season for the Lobos. He is ranked in the top 60 nationally by Golfstat and Golfweek and earned All-Mountain West honors for the fourth time in his career. His 70.44 stroke average in 2021-22 was the second-best season average in program history. Choi posted seven top-five individual finishes in 13 events this season, with 26 of his 39 rounds at par or better.

To be eligible for Academic All-America/All-District honors, an athlete must have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point-average, be a starter or key reserve, and be at least a sophomore academically.
