Lobos Climb to Seventh After Second Round of NCAA Regional

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team continued play at the NCAA Palm Beach Gardens Regional on Tuesday with the second round at PGA National. The Lobos shot 9-over during the second round to climb from ninth place to seventh place at 19-over, nine shots out of the fifth and final qualifying spot.

Third-ranked Vanderbilt leads the tournament at 9-under, followed by Florida State at even par. Florida is third at 2-over, South Florida is fourth at 6-over and College of Charleston holds the final qualifying spot at 10-over. Notre Dame is sixth at 12-over, followed by the Lobos at 19-over.

Bastien Amat led the Lobos on Tuesday by shooting a 2-under 70 in the second round. He is T-11th on the individual leaderboard at even par for the tournament. Sam Choi is also at even par for the week after posting a second-round 74. Matthew Watkins shot 75 in the second round, while Brandon Shong and Carson Herron each shot 78 on Tuesday.

“Today’s round was similar to yesterday’s round,” said head coach Glen Millican. “We are not exactly where we want to be at this point, but we are definitely within reach. We need a good round tomorrow.”

The tournament concludes Wednesday at PGA National. The top five teams at the event will advance to the NCAA Championships, held later this month in Scottsdale, Ariz.
