by Alma Solis

LAS VEGAS — The University of New Mexico baseball team fell to UNLV. 15-2, in game one of a three-game series against the Rebels at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas.

Johnny (Shane) Podsednik led the Lobos as he went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double, knocking the Lobos’ two runs in the top of the second. Lobo pitching combined for nine strikeouts tonight.

The Rebels opened up scoring as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first frame to take an early 2-0 advantage.

New Mexico swiftly tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the second. With runners on the corners and two outs, Podsednik ripped a double to right field to get the Lobos on the board.

The 2-2 tie after an inning and a half would be the closest would get for the rest of the game though. In the bottom of the second, the Rebels brought around four more runs to jump out back to a 6-2 lead. Starting pitcher Brett Russell struck out two in each of second and third innings.

UNLV jumped out to a 12-2 lead as they scattered six runs from the third through fifth innings. Bobby Meza came in to relieve B. Russell and struck out three batters in the fifth.

Meza and Jacob Strmiska combined to force the hot hitting Rebels to no runs on just three hits in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Rebels added three more runs and the Lobos were unable to connect on the ball, as New Mexico fell to UNLV by a final score of 15-2.

New Mexico’s record falls to 15-22 overall (6-12 in MW action), while UNLV’s record improves to 27-12 overall (16-3 in MW play).

The Lobos and Rebels will play game two of the three-game conference set tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas.
