ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico track & field team is set to host its second home meet, the Don Kirby Tailwind, on Thursday at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium. Track events are set to start with 8:30 a.m. (MT) with the men’s 5000m run, while field events begin with javelin at 1 p.m.
The Lobos are coming off an impressive weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays, where the squad earned nine qualifying marks or times. Elise Thorner highlighted the week as she ran a time of 9:40.98 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase which was first in the nation at that time. Her time was surpassed by Courtney Wayment the next day but Thorner still sits at second in the nation for her outstanding performance.
Thorner also hit a qualifying time for 11th place in the 1500m last weekend. The Lobos earned eight more qualifying marks or times last weekend in Adva Cohen (23rd place in 1500m and fifth in 5000m), Samree Dishon (44th place in 1500m), Abdirizak Ibrahim (40th place in men’s 5000m), Gracelyn Larkin (sixth in 5000m), Emma Heckel (26th in 5000m), Rivaldo Leacock (18th in 400m hurdles), and Aidan Quinn (35th in triple jump).
39 Lobos will compete on their home track this Thursday. The meet will conclude with the men’s 4x400m relay at 5 p.m.
Some Lobos will also travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Alumni Gold meet on Saturday.
