PHOENIX, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team had a strong start to the Thunderbird Collegiate on Friday with the first two rounds at the Papago Golf Course. The Lobos shot 11-under over the first 36 holes to be in fourth place amongst a field that features five of the top seven teams in the nation.
Host Arizona State, ranked fourth nationally, holds the lead at 19-under. Top-ranked Oklahoma is second at 17-under, one shot ahead of second-ranked Oklahoma State at 16-under. The Lobos are in fourth at 11-under, one shot ahead of seventh-ranked Texas Tech and eight shots ahead of fifth-ranked North Carolina.
“It was a good day for our guys,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Bastien obviously played great and everyone did a nice job throughout another long day. We put ourselves in good position for tomorrow.”
Bastien Amat is tied for second on the individual leaderboard at 9-under after rounds of 67 and 66 on Friday. Sam Choi and Matthew Watkins are also in red figures, each at 1-under through two rounds. Brandon Shong is at 3-over and Carson Herron is at 7-over.
The tournament concludes with the final round on Saturday at the Papago Golf Course.
