ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./CANYON, TEXAS – The University of New Mexico track & field team is set to host the UNM Spring Invite, their first of two home outdoor meets of the season, this Thursday at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium. A couple of Lobos, Emily Ho and Victoria Plummer, will be heading to West Texas A&M to compete in the heptathlon at the Jo Meaker Classic on Friday and Saturday.
At the Jo Meaker Classic, Ho and Plummer will compete in the women’s heptathlon on both Friday and Saturday. Friday’s events include 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m dash, beginning at 1:15 p.m. (CT). Saturday’s events will start at 2 p.m. and include long jump, javelin and 800m dash.
At the UNM Spring Invite, four other local schools are coming in to compete, including New Mexico State, New Mexico Highlands, Fort Lewis and Adams State.
The meet starts off with the first field event (javelin) at 1 p.m. (MT) and the first track event (women’s 4x100m relay) at 2:15 p.m. The Lobos will compete in nearly every track event, except women’s 100m hurdles, men’s 400m hurdles and men’s 4x400m relay. In the field events, the team will compete in high jump (both women and men), women’s pole vault, and long jump (both women and men).
Tianna Holmes will run in both the women’s 100m dash (3:50 p.m.) and 200m dash (5:05 p.m.). Holmes has set a new school record in both the indoor and outdoor 200m and 400m dash, even beating her own previous record multiple times, since joining the Lobos last season.
The women’s 1500m run (2:45 p.m.) and 800m run (4:05 p.m.) will also be some exciting races as some of the Lobos’ top distance runners will be competing in those events. Cross Country All-American Stefanie Parsons is set to run in the 1500m. Newcomer Sarah Eckel is running the 800m.
On the men’s side, multis star Camillo Dunninger will look to build on his success and improve on individual events, competing in the long jump (2 p.m.), 110m hurdles (2:35 p.m.) and 100m dash (4 p.m.) events.
Some more names to keep an eye on this weekend, includes Jovahn Williamson, Jevon O’Bryant and Rivaldo Leacock. Williamson and Leacock are both running in the 200m dash at 5:15 p.m. Leacock is also running the 400m dash at 3:45 p.m. Williamson is ranked No. 8 in the national qualifying list in the 400m dash, while Leacock is ranked No. 16 in the 400m hurdles event. O’Bryant is running in the 800m event (4:15 p.m.) this weekend and is currently in the top-100 in two events (No. 7 in the 400m dash and No. 91 in the 200m dash).
The Lobos have two meets on the schedule next week as they head to Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on April 13-15 and the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on April 13-16.
