Men's Tennis Heads to Houston for Final Non-Conference Weekend

by Frank Mercogliano

HOUSTON, Texas — The New Mexico Lobos head to Texas and more specifically Houston for its final two non-conference matches, a two-game swing that ends a month-long sojourn away from home.  The Lobos will take on the Rice Owls on Friday at 11 a.m. and then East Tennessee State on Saturday at noon.

The Lobos are coming off a 7-0 win over Boston University, the final match of three played in San Diego, California.  New Mexico sits at 6-7 and fell out of the latest ITA National Rankings ater debuting at No. 71.  The Lobos have moved players up and down the lineup under first-year head coach Chris Russell, giving UNM a lineup that has plenty of experience on the season.

Rice enters the weekend at 9-10, having lost its last two matches. Rice was in the same Arizona State tournament that UNM was in, going 1-2 that weekend, including a 4-3 win over Utah State, but the Owls have lost four of the last five.  East Tennessee State is 10-5 on the season, and until a 4-3 loss to No. 43 Charlotte, the Bucs had won seven straight.  After opening the season at No. 4 Tennessee for two and Clemson, ETSU has won 10 of its last 12.

The matches are UNM’s last non-conference matches of the season, and UNM will finally return home for an April 2 match with Air Force as the Lobos look to begin their title defense having won back-to-back Mountain West regular season titles.
