MESA, Ariz. – The New Mexico women’s golf team opened play Friday with a strong first round at the Clover Cup, hosted by Notre Dame at Longbow Golf Club. The Lobos shot 3-over during the first round to be tied for sixth place at 3-over amongst an elite field that features nine top-50 teams.
No. 31 TCU is the 18-hole leader at 4-under, two shots ahead of No. 41 Clemson and No. 17 LSU at 2-under. No. 30 Kentucky shot even par, followed by No.19 Texas A&M at 2-over and the Lobos and No. 28 Georgia tied for sixth at 3-over.
Myah McDonald led the Lobos on Friday, shooting a 3-under 69 to end the day T-4th on the individual leaderboard. Caroline Jansson, who had an ace on the par-3 seventh, shot even par 72, as did Chloe Lauer. Jenny Lertsadwattana and Lauren Lehigh both shot 78 on Friday to round out the UNM lineup.
“We finally had a good opening round,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “Myah’s six birdies helped keep our team toward the top. We got solid play from Chloe and Caroline, who made a spectacular hole-in-one on No. 7. Jenny and Lauren will bring their ‘A’-game tomorrow.”
The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at Longbow Golf Club.
