LAS VEGAS, Nev.— The Lobo women’s basketball team has known when they would be playing in the Mountain West Tournament, but now they know who they will be playing after San Diego State defeated Boise State 65-56 on Sunday in the first round.
UNM enters the conference tournament with five players in double figures in MW games, led by Jaedyn De La Cerda at 15.1 points per game, Shaiquel McGruder at 14.4, Antonia Anderson at 13.2, LaTascya Duff at 11.4 ppg and LaTora Duff at 11.2. De La Cerda has reached double figures in 14 MW games, McGruder in 13, Anderson and LaTascya in 10 and LaTora in nine. LaTascya has scored in double figures in the last two games, LaTora in the last three games, McGruder in four of the last five games and De La Cerda in eight of the last nine games.
UNM defeated SDSU in both meetings in the regular season, with the Lobos winning 75-72 in Albuquerque and 67-58 in San Diego.
New Mexico led the MW in scoring offense (78.5), three-pointers made per game (9.5), made three-pointers (171), assists (292), assists per game (16.2), blocked shots (76) and blocked shots per game (4.2) in conference play. UNM is second in assist/turnover ratio (1.4), field-goal percentage (.456), field-goal percentage defense (.396), free-throw percentage (.775), and in scoring margin (+9.3), and third in steals per game (7.9) and three-point field-goal percentage (.345).
In MW games, LaTascya leads with a .422 shooting percentage from three, made three-pointers (46) and made three-pointers per game. LaTascya, Antonia Anderson and De La Cerda are 1-6-10 in made three-pointers per game in MW games at 2.6 (LaTascya), 2.1 (De La Cerda) and 1.9 (Anderson) per game. McGruder leads in field-goal percentage (.611), blocks (30) and blocks per game (1.7) with Anderson third in blocks (25) and blocks per game (1.4) and fifth in steals per game (1.7) with 31 steals. LaTora is third in assists per game (5.1) and assists with 92.
The Aztecs are led in scoring by Sophia Ramos with 15.2 points per game, one of four players averaging double figures in conference play. Asia Avinger (13.0), Mallory Adams (12.0) and Mercedes Staples (10.3) round out the double-digit scorers. Adams leads the team in rebounds per game with 8.0, Avinger leads with 80 assists in conference and Ramos leads with 36 steals.
UNM is 7-3 all-time against SDSU in the MW Tournament, but 38-32 all-time against the Aztecs. Going into the tournament, the Lobos also had a conference-high three members selected to the MW All-Conference Team in Antonia Anderson, Jaedyn De La Cerda and Shaiquel McGruder, as well as an honorable mention in LaTora Duff, a member of the all-defensive team in McGruder and a member of the all-freshman team in Paula Reus.
