COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –– New Mexico swept the weekly Mountain West Men’s Golf honors this week as Sam Choi was named Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week and Carson Herron was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Thursday. The pair were honored after the Lobos won the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai’i.
It is the fifth Golfer of the Week of Choi’s career, his second honor of the season as he was also recognized on Jan. 27. It is the first conference of Herron’s career.
Choi shot 71-67-67 over the three rounds this week at the Ocean Course at Hokuala to finish T-2nd at the John Burns Intercollegiate, leading the Lobos to their second team victory of the season. He has shot seven consecutive rounds of par or better, dating back to the fall, posting his second straight individual runner-up finish.
Herron, playing as an individual, had his first career top-20 finish, as he finished T-14th at the John Burns Intercollegiate. He finished 3-under at the event, including shooting a first-round 67, his best round as a collegian.
The Lobos return to action on Sunday with the start of the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas. The tournament runs Feb. 27-Mar. 1 at Southern Highlands Country Club.
