LIHUE, Hawai’i –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Thursday at the John Burns Intercollegiate with the first round at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Lobos shot 7-under during the opening round and are tied for second place.
Arizona is the first-round leader at 13-under, with New Mexico and Fresno State tied for second at 7-under. Utah (6-under) and USC (5-under) round out the top five following Thursday’s play.
“It was a good start to the tournament for us,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Holes 13-18 played hard, but our guys got through the stretch OK and we finished well as we concluded the round on holes 1-6. Overall a good job today.”
Carson Herron, playing as an individual, had the low round among the Lobos on Thursday, shooting a 5-under 67 to be T-4th on the individual leaderboard. Bastien Amat led New Mexico’s lineup with a 4-under 68 and is T-9th individually. Sam Choi, Brandon Shong and Matthew Watkins all shot a 1-under 71 during the first round, while Ignacio Arcaya rounded out the lineup with a 3-over 75.
The John Burns Intercollegiate will continue Friday with the second round and conclude with the final round on Saturday.
