by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Lobo women’s tennis team rode a comeback in doubles to a x-x win over Abilene Christian, ending the Wildcats’ four-match winning streak and pushing UNM to a 4-1 record on the season.

The matches were played inside the Linda Estes Tennis Center Bubbles.

The Lobos found themselves trailing in all three doubles matches early, 3-2 at both No. 1 and No. 2, and 4-1 at No. 3. At No. 1, Yue Lin “Polly” Chen and Myu Kageyama bounced back to win the final four games to take a 6-3 win, but with Hsuan Huang and Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang lost 6-4, the meant the doubles point would come down to Sarah O’Connor and Maria Sodre, two freshmen.

The were able to battle back from down 4-1 to take a 5-4 lead.  Their opponents Maryjoe Crisologo and Andrea Guerrero took the 10th game, and had service, but Sarah O’Connor at the net cut off a passing shot for a winner, and UNM broke right back and took a 6-5 lead.  Sodre then served out the 12th game for a 7-5 win and a 1-0 lead in the match for UNM.

From there, UNM took three straight set wins to clinch the match with four.  Albie Huang and Hsuan Huang bounced back from doubles to put UNM up 3-0 as Albie won 6-2, 6-0 and Hsuan won 6-1, 6-3.

UNMM needed just one more, and it was Chen who clinched it, coming back from down 5-4 in the second to win 6-3, 7-5.  With that, the teams decided to finish the other matches out.  Maria Sodre fell 6-3, 7-5, missing out on a chance with set point to force a third.  Sarah O’Connor forced a super-set tiebreaker but ultimately lost 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) to Allison Stewart.

Kageyama gave UNM the final point with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.

The Lobos host New Mexico State on Saturday at 1 pm at either McKinnon or Estes.
