Swimming & Diving Senior Day Postponed Until Friday

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For Raine Gavino, Jordan Hartley, Mari Aoki, Jocelyn Gallais, Hannah Teindas and Daphne Scheck, Thursday’s home meet serves as Senior Day, and it serves as a reminder that you have to enjoy the things you are given.

One year after UNM had to scrap the entire 2020-21 season due to COVID-19, and having a few parts of meets canceled this season due to COVID issues, UNM’s seniors will get a chance to perform in front of the home fans one more time.  It’s something that didn’t happen for last years’ senior class.  Fans must wear masks at the meet, but fans will not have to show proof of vaccine or a negative COVID test.

The Senior Day meet will be a double dual with Adams State and UT-Permian Basin.  It will start with diving at 4:15 at Seidler Natatorium, and UNM’s Senior Day ceremonies will begin around 4:40 pm or so.  The meet will be be a double dual, meaning that UNM, Adams State and UT-Permian Basin will all swim at the same time, and the times will be posted against each school, so UNM will get a result against each school, and Adams State and UT-Permain Basin will have a result against each other.

Additionally, after each women’s event, the Adams State and UT-Permian Basin men’s swimming and diving teams will compete and swim a reciprocal event.

The Lobos are 3-3 on the season, and 2-1 at home.  They are coming off a 174-126 loss at New Mexico State and are hopeful to get back a few swimmers that missed that meet.  A full event list will be posted on Twitter at @UNMLoboSwimDive.

NOTES: The diving events will be contested at the front end of the meet to allow the UNM squad to hit the road for the NAU Diving Invitational, starting on Friday morning at 10:30 am.
