Lobos Drop 174-126 Decision to NMSU
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico was game to spoil NMSU’s Senior Day, but it wasn’t to be as the Lobos could only win five of the 16 events as NMSU sweep the season series 174-126.
The Lobos, who hadn’t lost to NMSU in 10 years, were without a few key performers including Josie Carpenter, one of the top distance swimmers in the West. UNM was just coming off a COVID pause, and the lack of pool action hurt UNM in its attempt to even the season series.
The Lobos got wins from Camila Batista (1,000 free), Kailey Turner (200 butterfly), Katy McCarter (50 free), Gracie Moylan (500 free) and Marina Olmstead (100 butterfly).
The two big keys were in the breaststroke, where NMSU outscored UNM 29-9, and in the two relays, where NMSU outscored UNM 26-8.
The Lobos, now 3-3 on the season, host Adams State and UT Permian Basin on Thursday, February 3 on senior day for the program. The Lobos will say goodbye to six seniors, Mari Aoki, Jocelyn Gallais, Raine Gavino, Jordan Hartley and Daphne Scheck and Hannah Tiendas.
