TUCSON, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began its spring schedule Monday with the first day of the Arizona Intercollegiate, held at the Tucson Country Club. When darkness halted play midway through the second round, the Lobos were in second place at 14-under after shooting 11-under in the first round and 3-under during the first part of the second round.

Tournament host Arizona holds the lead at 25-under, followed by the Lobos at 14-under and fifth-ranked Arkansas at 12-under. BYU (7-under) and Iowa State (6-under) round out the top five.

“Good playing by our guys today,” said head coach Glen Millican. “The course is in great shape with fast greens and good hole locations. Some wind in the afternoon made the second round more challenging, but our guys did a good job all day long.”

Four Lobos are in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard after the first day. Brandon Shong is in 5th place at 6-under after shooting 68 in round one and at 2-under through 12 holes of his second round. Sam Choi is T-6th at 5-under with a 69 in the morning and 2-under through 13 holes of round two. Carson Herron is T-9th at 4-under, shooting a 2-under 70 before being 2-under through 12 holes of the second round. Ignacio Arcaya, playing as an individual, is T-6th at 5-under after shooting a first-round 67. Matthew Watkins is 1-over and Bastien Amat is 5-over to round out the lineup.

The Arizona Intercollegiate will conclude Tuesday with the completion of the second round, followed by the third round.
