Lobo Track & Field Hosts MLK Invitational in Indoor Home Opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobo Track & Field program opens four straight weekends of indoor home meets with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational this Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Field events begin with women’s high jump and weight throw at 8:30 a.m. (MT) and track events start with men’s 3000 meters at 9:45 a.m.

The teams competing in this meet include Adams State, Arizona State, Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly Pomona, California, CSU-Pueblo, Eastern New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Nevada, New Mexico Highlands, New Mexico State, Pepperdine, San Francisco, Trinidad State JUCO, West Texas A&M, California-Irvine and UTEP.

Spectators are welcome to the Albuquerque Convention Center for all of New Mexico’s home meets but are required to wear a mask at all times, unless eating or drinking. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the “Tickets” link above or on site on the day of the meet.

The Lobos return to action with high hopes as many student-athletes set high standards in recent months. At the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, distance runner Emma Heckel placed third in the U20 race with a time 13:46. In the Air Force Holiday Open on Dec. 3, Aidan Quinn set a new personal record in the triple jump with a mark of 15.73 meters, also earning the fourth best mark in Scottish history. At the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Dec. 4, Abdirizak Ibrahim set a new school record in the 5000m event with a time of 13:32.78. The record had previously been untouched for nearly eight years as Luke Caldwell ran a time of 13:34.54 in 2014.
