ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team returns to action after a week off when it hosts SMU Sunday afternoon. Tipoff at The Pit is 1 pm. and the game will be available to watch online on Stadium and broadcast on the Lobo Radio Network.
Sunday’s game features a Diaper Drive, benefitting the UNM Children’s Hospital. Fans who donate diapers when they arrive will receive a free UNM Health water bottle. There will also be face painters in the north concourse pregame and throughout the first half.
The game is the first of two Lobo basketball games at The Pit on Sunday as the UNM women’s team will host UTEP at 6 p.m. Separate tickets are needed for both the games.
The Lobos (6-5) are coming off a 77-69 loss to UTEP last Sunday at The Pit. The Miners used a 16-1 run to start the second half to take control of the game. Javonte Johnson led the Lobos with 16 points, all in the second half. Jamal Mashburn, Jr. leads UNM in scoring this season at 18.3 points per game.
The Mustangs (8-3) are playing for the first time in 11 days, having not played since a 77-69 win over Dayton on Dec. 8. SMU is riding a five-game win streak that included a win over Mountain West foe UNLV on Dec. 1. The Mustangs are looking for their first win away from home this season as they are 8-0 at Moody Coliseum and 0-3 in games away from Dallas. Kendric Davis leads SMU in scoring at 20.2 ppg this season.
New Mexico has won all three previous games between the schools, all coming from 1997-99 when both were in the WAC. The last meeting was a 57-56 Lobo victory in the 1999 WAC Tournament in Las Vegas. The only previous matchup at The Pit was a 78-58 New Mexico victory in 1997. In 2014, Richard Pitino capped his first season at Minnesota by defeating SMU in the NIT Final at Madison Square Garden.
Following Sunday’s game, the Lobos will wrap up the non-conference schedule on Tuesday against reigning MEAC Champion Norfolk State. Game time is 7 p.m. Tickets for all UNM home games at The Pit are available online at GoLobos.com/tickets.
