ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team continues a six-game December homestand on Sunday afternoon as it hosts UTEP. Tipoff at The Pit is 1 pm. and the game will be available to watch online on Stadium and broadcast on the Lobo Radio Network.
Sunday’s game is Hispanic Heritage Day at The Pit. In partnership with the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber, we’ll celebrate Albuquerque’s Hispanic culture at this contest between two Hispanic serving institutions.
For UNM Students, Sunday’s game is a study break before finals. The first 300 students in attendance will receive free soda, chips and cookies. The game is also UNM Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day as faculty and staff can buy discounted tickets online by using the code that was in a recent email.
The Lobos (6-4) are coming off an 87-67 victory over Denver on Thursday night. KJ Jenkins scored a season-high 21 points, all in the second half, while Gethro Muscadin had 12 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Jamal Mashburn, Jr. leads New Mexico in scoring at 19.9 points per game and is the first Lobo to score in double figures in each of the first 10 games of a season since Kendall Williams in 2013-14.
The Miners (4-4) are coming off a 78-52 loss to No. 8 Kansas Tuesday night in Kansas City. UTEP and New Mexico have played three common games this season. Both teams defeated Western New Mexico at home and played New Mexico State twice, with the Lobos splitting the series with the Aggies and the Miners dropping both contests to NMSU. Souley Boum, a transfer from San Francisco, leads UTEP in scoring at 19.8 points per game.
New Mexico leads the series 78-68, which included stints as conference foes in the Border Conference and the WAC. Since the series returned to non-conference status in 2000, the Lobos lead 5-4, winning four of the five matchups this century at The Pit. The teams last met in 2019-20, a 66-63 Miner victory in El Paso. The Lobos have won the last three in Albuquerque, most recently 84-78 in 2018-19.
Following a week off for finals, the Lobos will close out the non-conference schedule against SMU on Dec. 19 and Norfolk State on Dec. 21. Tickets for all UNM home games at The Pit are available online at GoLobos.com/tickets.
