Lobo Baseball Completes 2022 Schedule

by Alma Solis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Under the new reins of head coach Tod Brown, the University of New Mexico has set its 2022 schedule, ready to take on a variety of Power Five, non-conference and conference opponents.

The Lobos open the 2022 spring slate in the annual Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz., from Feb. 18-21, where they will face Gonzaga twice, Pac-12 opponent Oregon State once and Saint Mary’s (CA) once. Surprise Stadium is the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers, as well as hosting the Arizona Fall League which features top prospects from each MLB team. The team has been invited to the tournament six times in the past eight seasons, including during the 2015 season and every season since 2018.

New Mexico will open its home slate at Santa Ana Star Field with a four-game series against Holy Cross from Feb. 25-27, the first time the teams face each other in program history. The team will face an array of non-conference non-Power 5 opponents throughout the season. They will travel to Wichita State from March 18-20 for a three-game series. The Lobos will travel to state rival New Mexico State twice (March 29 and April 5), as well as hosting the Aggies on May 10 and May 17. The team will also host Grand Canyon on April 26.

In addition to facing Pac-12 opponent Oregon State in their season-opening tournament, the Lobos will face a few other Power 5 opponents in the spring. The team faces the Pac-12 Arizona Wildcats twice – once in Tucson on March 8 and once at home on March 23. They will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Big 12’s Texas Tech in a two-game midweek series on March 15-16, later hosting them for a two-game midweek series on April 18-19 at Santa Ana Star Field. The last Power 5 opponent the Lobos will face is Pac-12 California, traveling to Berkeley, Calif., on May 13-15.

New Mexico’s conference schedule involves facing each opponent in two three-game series – once home and once away – with the exception of San Diego State, who they only face at home, and Nevada, who they only face away in Reno. The Lobos travel to San Jose State to open the conference season against the Spartans from March 4-6, before returning home to host Fresno State from March 11-13. The Lobos hit the road to face Air Force on March 25-27, then hosting UNLV the next weekend on April 1-3. The team travels to Fresno, Calif., on April 8-10 for its away series against the Bulldogs.

The Lobos host San Diego State on April 14-16, the only time the two squads will meet in the spring, before hitting the road to face the Rebels in Las Vegas on April 22-24. The team will host the Spartans on April 29-May 1, before meeting Nevada in Reno on May 6-8 for their only series against each other of the season. New Mexico closes outs the regular season hosting Air Force on May 19-21. The Mountain West Tournament is set for May 26-28 in San Diego, Calif.

Coach Brown is excited to face some quality opponents in the upcoming season.

“It’s a very challenging schedule,” Brown said. “It has a good balance of home and away opponents. We’re excited to have some home and away games against quality opponents in our region.”
