Aaron Dumas Named MW Freshman of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Aaron Dumas, a true freshman from El Paso, Texas, was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week after a stellar performance against Fresno State on Saturday. The announcement was a part of the league’s weekly awards that saw Charles Williams of UNLV earn Offensive Player of the Week honors, Cameron Thomas of San Diego State earn Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Matt Araiza of San Diego State earn Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Dumas rushed for a career-best 143 yards on 23 carries against Fresno State, including rushing for UNM’s only score of the game, a 1-yard third quart touchdown. Dumas also had a career-long 63 yard run in the first quarter of the game, but UNM couldn’t capitalize. The 143 rushing yards are the most by a Lobo freshman since Cole Gautsche rushed for 149 yards as a quarterback against Wyoming on Nov. 10, 2012. It was the most rushing yards by a freshman running back since DonTrell Moore rushed for 179 yards against Wyoming on Nov. 30, 2002.
The rookie now has 622 yards rushing. It is the most rushing yards by a true freshman since Cole Gautsche rushed for 760 as an option quarterback in 2012, and it’s the most by a freshman running back since the great DonTrell Moore rushed for 1,134 in 2002 as a redshirt freshman.
