by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After going two years without a meet, the Lobos are ready for their fourth meet of the 2021-22 season as UNM heads to Flagstaff, Arizona to take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.  The two teams will compete in the 3-meter dive on Friday afternoon, with the rest of the meet, including the 1-meter dive, taking place on Saturday starting at 10:30 am.

The Lobos are 2-1 on the season, coming off a 196-157 loss to New Mexico State last weekend.  That was UNM’s first loss to the Aggies in 11 years.  UNM and Northern Arizona have split its eight meetings with each team winning four.  NAU won the last meeting on November 1, 2019, a 169-131 matchup in Flagstaff.  The Lobos have lost the last two meetings in Flagstaff, last winning on January 23, 2016, 154-145.  That meet wasn’t decided until a 1-2-3 sweep by UNM in the 200-yard individual medley and then a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Lobos will be without Laura Benkova for the second straight meet as she readies for the European Championships.  UNM has been getting great results from Kailey Turner who won the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly against NMSU.  UNM will also to look to ride another good showing out of the diving team as Daphne Scheck and Jocelyn Gallais each won an event and finished third in the other.

The meet is UNM’s final dual meet before the Christmas break, although UNM will take on all comers in the Phil Hansel Invitational in Houston in two weeks.
