Lobos to Host Women’s Tennis Classic

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It probably won’t be overly spooky, but the Lobo Women’s Tennis team will get a chance to play at McKinnon for a fall tournament for the first time in two years as UNM will host its Halloween Classic Friday through Sunday, October 29-31.

UNM will host Northern Arizona, New Mexico State and Colorado State in the classic, with each team playing one team in singles and a different team in doubles on each day.  Each day will start at 9:30 am.

The Lobos will open play on Friday at 11:30 am against Northern Arizona in doubles, and then will play Colorado State in singles at 1 pm.  On Saturday, UNM will open at 9:30 am against New Mexico State in singles, and then face Colorado State in doubles at 11:30.

On Halloween, the day will start with doubles at 9:30 with UNM and New Mexico State playing.  At 11 am, UNM will take on Northern Arizona at McKinnon while New Mexico State and Colorado State will play at the same time in the only matches at the Estes Tennis Center.

The Lobos will look to continue their hot start in their fourth of five fall meets.  UNM as a group is 29-15 on the year in singles.  Satoho Toriumi is 6-1 on the year to lead the way with Hsuan Huang at 5-1.  Five players, Toriumi, Huang, Myu Kagayama, Hsaing-Wen Huang and Yue Lin Chen all have at least five singles wins.

The Lobos will be looking for improvement on the doubles front, as UNM is 6-10 overall in doubles.  Hsuan Huang has a team leading three wins.
