SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Lobos went 5-4 in their action at the Utah Invitational, running their overall record to 9-9. The Lobos continued to excel in singles, winning four of six for the second straight day.
In singles, the Lobos picked up wins at Nos. 2 (Hsuan Huang), 3 (Myu Kageyama), 4 Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and 6 (Satoho Toriumi). UNM also got a No. 3 doubles win from Hsuan Huang and Sarah O’Connor. The Lobos faced Utah State in doubles and Weber State in singles.
Hsuan Huang took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Yuuna Ukita while Kageyama beat Patty Kuo 6-4, 6-2. UNM also got a straight set win from Albie Huang 6-1, 6-2 over WSU’s Megan Lombardi. The match of the day was at No. 6 where Toriumi came back in rousing fashion. She dropped her first set 6-1 but won a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) and then won the final set in a blitz, winning 6-0. That win came over Megan Davies.
Yue Lin “Polly” Chen lost 7-5, 6-3 to Ana Morett at No. 1 and O’Connor lost at No. 5 6-2, 6-4 to Sicely Ferreira.
In doubles against Utah State, UNM picked up its first doubles victory of the tournament, winning 8-7 (8-2) at No. 3 as O’Connor and Hsuan Huang defeated Lisa Kung and Brooke Demerath.
UNM finishes the tournament on Sunday with doubles against Weber State and singles against Utah.
